How to Make Pizza Margherita at Home in 20 Minutes

Pizza Margherita is proof that simplicity can be spectacular. With its golden crust, tangy tomato sauce, creamy mozzarella, and fresh basil, this classic embodies the true spirit of Italian cooking. The best part? You can have it hot and bubbling on the table in just 20 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 ready-made pizza dough (thin crust)
  • 150 g tomato passata or pizza sauce
  • 200 g fresh mozzarella
  • 8–10 fresh basil leaves
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F) so it’s hot and ready for baking.
  2. Roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface or baking sheet. If using pre-rolled dough, place it directly on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
  3. Spread the tomato passata evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges for the crust.
  4. Tear the mozzarella into chunks and scatter them evenly across the pizza.
  5. Drizzle lightly with olive oil.
  6. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling.
  7. Remove from the oven and immediately top with fresh basil leaves.
  8. Slice and serve hot.

Tips & Variations

  • Brush the crust with olive oil before baking for extra crispness.
  • Add a sprinkle of sea salt or oregano for more flavor.
  • For a smoky twist, bake on a pizza stone if you have one.
  • Use buffalo mozzarella for a more authentic taste.
