Affogato served in a glass

Affogato: The Italian Coffee Dessert You Didn’t Know You Needed

Sometimes the best desserts are also the simplest. Affogato is Italy’s effortless way to end a meal: creamy vanilla gelato drowned in hot, strong espresso. With just five ingredients, it’s rich, refreshing, and the perfect mix of hot and cold in every spoonful.

Ingredients

  • 2 scoops vanilla gelato (or ice cream)
  • 1 shot freshly brewed espresso
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder (optional dusting)
  • 1 tsp shaved dark chocolate (optional topping)
  • 1 biscotti or cookie for serving

Instructions

Brew a fresh shot of espresso so it’s hot and aromatic. To simplify the recipe, as originally this is done with classic espresso, you can use anything you have: a moka pot espresso or simply a capsule-brewed one.

Scoop the gelato into a small glass or dessert cup.

Pour the hot coffee directly over the gelato.

Sprinkle with cocoa powder and dark chocolate shavings if using.

Serve immediately with a biscotti on the side.

Tips & Variations

  • Swap vanilla for hazelnut or chocolate gelato for a twist.
  • Add a splash of liqueur (like amaretto) for an adult version.
  • Serve in a chilled glass for a dramatic hot-and-cold contrast.
